Sebelas Maret University Surakarta Faculty of Agriculture (Fakultas Pertanian UNS), established in 1976, is one of the leading state educational institutions in Central Java that produces professional and academic personnel in the field of agriculture.
Sebelas Maret University Faculty of Agriculture Surakarta was formerly known as Faculty of Agriculture Private University which was incorporated in the Joint University of Surakarta. Furthermore, it was inaugurated as a State University on March 11, 1976 by Republic of Indonesia Presidential Decree No. 10 of 1976, dated March 8, 1976 formerly named as Surakarta State University Eleven March shortened into UNS.
At the beginning of its birth, the UNS Faculty of Agriculture had two departments: Department of Agricultural Cultivation (Budidaya Pertanian) and Agricultural Socio-Economic Department (Sosial Ekonomi Pertanian). The Department of Agricultural Cultivation had two study programs: Agronomy and Soil Science (Ilmu Tanah), Agricultural Socio-Economics also had two study programs: Agricultural Economics (Ekonomi Pertanian) and Rural Sociology (Sosiologi Pedesaan) (Based on the Decree of the Directorate General of Higher Education No. 39 / Dikti / Kep / 1984, issued on June 20 1984). In subsequent developments in 1996 through the Directorate General of Higher Education Decree No. 222 / DIKTI / Kep / 1996 dated July 11, 1996, UNS Faculty of Agriculture was decided to have 4 Study Programs: Agronomy, Soil Science, Agricultural Socio-Economics (Agribusiness), Agricultural Counseling and Communication (Penyuluhan dan Komunikasi Pertanian); and since 1997 with the Decree of the Directorate General of Higher Education No. 446 / DIKTI / Kep / 1997 issued on December 5, 1997, added a Study Program: Livestock Production (Produksi Ternak). In accordance with the letter from the Directorate General of Higher Education Number: 2782 / D / T / 2004 which issued on July 16, 2004 regarding the permit for the implementation of the Agricultural Product Technology Study Program (S1) at UNS, then on Academic Year of 2004/2005 UNS Faculty of Agriculture opened a new study program: Agricultural Product Technology (Teknologi Hasil Pertanian).
To provide opportunities for Diploma I, II, and III graduates and to accommodate high school graduates who did not have the opportunity to take the State University Entrance Examination, students who have a strong desire to continue at Strata-1 level. Furthermore, since 1995 the Faculty of Agriculture has held Non-Regular Programs based on the Directorate General of Higher Education Decree No. 119 / DIKTI / KEP / 1996 and No. 443 / DIKTI / KEP / 1996, issued on 26 August 1996 for the Agricultural Agronomy and Socio-Economic Study Programs, and the Rector's Decree No. 128 / J27.PP / 1997, issued June 6 1997 for the Soil Science Study Program.
Along with the dynamics occurred in education world especially higher education or university level, started on 29 November 2007, the government through the Director General of Higher Education, Ministry of National Education issued Decree No. 163 / DIKTI / KEP / 2007 which explains the Structuring and Codification of Study Programs at University, therefor Faculty of Agriculture which previously had six Departments / Study Programs with the process of became four Study Programs, namely the Agrotechnology / Agroecotechnology Study Program (the result of merging Agronomy and Soil Science Study Programs), Agribusiness Study Program (the result of merging Agribusiness and Agricultural Counseling and Communication Study Programs).The rest were renamed, Agricultural Product Technology Study Program renamed to Food Science and Technology Study Program (Ilmu dan Teknologi Pangan) and Livestock Production Study Program renamed to Livestock Study Program (Perternakan).
In the 2013/2014 Academic Year by the Ministry of Education and Culture Decree Number: 115 / E / O / 2013 about the Permits Reestablishment to Operate Study Programs at Sebelas Maret University Surakarta, therefor Agricultural Counseling and Communication; and Soil Science Study Programs at the UNS Faculty of Agriculture was re-established and started to accept new students in the 2013/2014 Academic Year. Up to 2015, UNS Faculty of Agriculture had six undergraduate study programs: Agrotechnology, Agribusiness, Livestock, Food Science and Technology, Agricultural Counseling and Communication; and Soil Science. While, the Diploma III Study Program consists of two study programs: Agricultural Product Technology and Agribusiness study programs.
