The Faculty of Agriculture of the Universitas Sebelas Maret (FP UNS) established in 1976 is one of the reputably educational state institution in Central Java producing professionals and academics in the field of agriculture. FP UNS in Surakarta emanated from Faculty of Agriculture of a private university incorporated with the association of universities in Surakarta. Afterwards, the association of universities in Surakarta was officially announced as a state university on 11th March 1976 through the decree of the president of Indonesia No. 10 year 1976 dated 8th March 1976 with its official name Universitas Negeri Surakarta Sebelas Maret abbreviated as UNS.
In its emergence as one of the faculties in UNS, FP UNS had two departments, namely Agricultural Cultivation and Social Economy of Agriculture. Department of Crop Cultivation had two programs, Agronomy and Soil Science, whereas Social Economy of Agriculture also had two programs, Agricultural Economics and Rural Sociology.
In 1996, based on the decree of Directorate General of Higher Education (SK Ditjen DIKTI No. 222/DIKTI/Kep/1996), FP UNS had four programs; Agronomy, Soil Science, Social Economy of Agriculture, and Agricultural Counselling and Communication. Later, in 1997, the program of Livestock Production has been added. Based on the decree Ditjen DIKTI Nomor: 2782/D/T/2004 dated 16th July 2004 FP UNS opened a new program, Agricultural Product Technology.
Due to the dynamics occurred in education especially college, government through Directorate General of Higher Education, Ministry of National Education, issued a decree about Structuring and Codification of the Study Programs in College (SK Ditjen DIKTI No. 163/DIKTI/KEP/2007). Therefore, FP UNS, which previously had six departments, was merged into four, namely, Agrotechnology (a combination of Agronomy and Soil Science) and Agribusiness (a combination of Agribusiness and Agricultural Counselling and Communication programs). Meanwhile for the othertwo departments remained the same but their names changed from Agricultural Product Technology to Food Technology (with two study programs, Food Science and Technology and Agricultural Product Technology) as well as Livestock Production changed into Animal Science Department.
In 2013 based on the decree of Ministry of Education and Culture (SK Kementerian Pendidikan dan Kebudayaan No. 115/E/O/2013), Agricultural Counselling and Communication and Soil Science programs were reassigned. They started to accept new students in the academic year 2013/2014. Recently, FP UNS has six bachelor programs, namely, Agrotechnology, Agribusiness, Animal Science, Food Science and Technology, Agricultural Counselling and Communication, and Soil Science. The Faculty also has two diploma programs, which are Agricultural Product Technology and Agribusiness.
